Intent

At Ryecroft, children are taught high-quality art and design skills to engage, inspire and challenge them. Our teaching aims to equip them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they are encouraged to think critically about their own work and the work of others. The art curriculum aims to develop children’s understanding of their own and others’ cultural heritages through studying a diverse range of artists.  

Implementation

At Ryecroft, we enable children to express themselves in a creative, individual and imaginative manner. Taught strategies and techniques are built upon using a progression of skills and through a theme driven curriculum, where knowledge is acquired as part of cross curricular learning. Wherever possible, first- hand experiences and real artefacts are used to stimulate creativity and expression. By the end of Year Two, it is expected that most children will have developed the skills and knowledge set out in Key Stage One. All children have an individual sketch book beginning in Foundation Stage, which is used alongside other creative work to evidence the development of their artistic skills throughout their time at Ryecroft.

Impact

Our children will develop their proficiency in a wide range of strategies and techniques. We provide opportunities for them to evaluate and analyse creative works of their own and those of great artists, craft makers and designers.  They will develop their knowledge of the historical and cultural development of a variety of art forms.Their knowledge and skills will develop progressively as they move through the school and they will be encouraged to reflect and take a sense of pride in their creative achievements.
