Intent

At Ryecroft, geography lessons aim to promote children’s natural curiosity and interest about the world and its people. Pupils gain knowledge of places, people, resources and environments both natural and human. Through these lessons geographical vocabulary is taught. 

Implementation

We are enthusiastic about geography and encourage children to explore and ask questions.Throughout school, Geography is taught through a skills based theme driven centred curriculum where knowledge is acquired as part of cross curricular learning. Children study the earth’s surface using maps and globes to identify landmasses and water. Technology is used to gather facts and information about other countries around the world and local visits are planned to enhance children's understanding of the area they live in. Children can then use this knowledge to compare their local environment with the wider world.

Impact

By the end of Key stage 1, Children will have developed the geographical knowledge and skills to help them explore, navigate, and understand the world around them and their place in it. Children’s knowledge and skills will develop as they move through the school, allowing them to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum and prepare them for their geography learning in their next educational phase.
