Intent

Mathematics is essential to every day life. At Ryecroft, we encourage children to have a sense of enjoyment and curiosity for the subject. We aim to provide children with the key skills, concepts and understanding needed to solve mathematical problems quickly and accurately. Children will be taught to understand relationships and patterns in both number and space in their everyday lives. 

Implementation

Mathematics is taught daily throughout school focusing on both key skills, mental fluency and reasoning. The lessons are designed to teach the National curriculum objectives in Key Stage 1 and the EYFS framework in Foundation stage. The school uses White Rose maths resources to support teaching and learning. Lessons are planned to teach children in developing and extending their mathematical skills in a range of areas such as; 

• Place value 

• Addition and subtraction  

• Multiplication and division 

• Fractions 

• Measurement 

• Properties of shape 

• Position and direction  

• Statistics 

The strategies we teach children to solve calculations are outlined in our calculation policy. We provide children with a wide range of resources such as counting objects, number lines, 100 squares, base 10 to support their learning. Children will be encouraged to progress to pictorial representations. Children will have the opportunity to build competency in this subject by taking the approach Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract.

During lessons, ‘immediate feedback’ and ‘same day’ interventions are used to ensure misconceptions are quickly addressed. Children are encouraged to explain strategies and their understanding. Opportunities are given to parents to come to our ‘Stay and play’ Mathematics sessions to experience and gain an understanding of how Mathematics is taught within school. Weekly homework is given to children so that they can consolidate their learning.  

Impact

In order to become capable mathematicians, children will have developed a deep and secure knowledge and understanding of Mathematics. Children will become fluent with their mathematics skills and be able to apply their knowledge in a range of contexts. Children’s progress is tracked, monitored and interventions are used to ensure judgements are accurate and inline with national expectations.
