Intent

At Ryecroft Infant School, it is our intent that we make music an enjoyable learning experience by providing a high-quality music education which engages and inspires pupils to develop a love of music and their talents as musicians. We encourage children to participate in a variety of musical experiences to increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.

Implementation

Here at Ryecroft Infant School we feel music is an important part of our wider curriculum and how it supports self-esteem and emotional wellbeing. Music is taught on a weekly basis throughout school using the Charanga Music Scheme in line with the Rotherham Music Service.

In correspondence with the National Curriculum for music and guidance from Ofsted, the Scheme moves away from the previous levels and learning objective/outcome concepts to an integrated, practical, exploratory and child-led approach to musical learning, something we feel is very important here at Ryecroft Infant School. 

Impact

Our music Curriculum is planned to demonstrate progression and build on and embed current skills. We focus on progression of knowledge and skills in the different musical components and teaching of vocabulary also forms part of the units of work. Through a rich curriculum children should access fundamental abilities such as: achievement, self-confidence, interaction with and awareness of others, and self-awareness of others. Children are able to enjoy music, in as many ways as they choose – either as listener, creator or performer.
