Welcome to Class 4

Mrs Sinclair and Mrs Beckham would like to welcome you to Year 1.

The children have had a great start to their year 1 journey. They have settled in well are all now familiar with the rules and routines in place. The children have loved the ‘Let’s safari’ theme for the first half term, especially getting to visit the wildlife park and meeting Michelle the tortoise have been our highlights.

Next half term our theme is called ‘To infinity and beyond’. This theme focuses on space and historical links. The children will learn about Neil Armstrong and his experiences of landing on the moon. We will read stories about Aliens to enable us to write our own simple story versions. There will be a very exciting event of an alien crash landing which will begin our theme. We will also have a week celebrating bonfire night and learning about Guy Fawkes with lots of other linked learning opportunities.

In Literacy our writing will focus on character descriptions, poetry and story writing. We will continue to work hard to use capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. To make our writing more interesting we will be learning to use adjectives. The children will be encouraged to use the non-negotiable checklists to develop more independence at checking their own work and noticing mistakes.

In Mathematics we will be introducing Friday maths challenges which will help to develop our arithmetic skills and quick recall of number facts. We will be introducing money, measurements and time as well as building upon our previous number skills.

In Theme we will have lots of opportunities to create Alien/ space themed artwork using a variety of different media. This will include designing and making underpants, as well as making and painting clay aliens. Children will develop their cooking skills by spreading and mixing ingredients to make alien buns/biscuits.
