At Rawmarsh Ryecroft, reading is the foundation of our curriculum and the centre of all that we do. It is our intention and view that every child will be a reader. From the beginning of their time with us, children are supported to develop both the skills to read and a love of reading. They have access to high quality texts which are read to them, with them and by them to develop their enjoyment of books. With parents as partners, we encourage reading in a variety of ways, striving to ensure that children share this with their families.
Reading Book Shares
Ryecroft loves to invite parents into school to read with their child. We call this ‘The Great Ryecroft Story Share’ and this is held in school each term. We have a selection of books for you and your child to read together and enjoy in our school hall. Once you have completed reading your chosen book you can enter our ‘Golden Bookmark’ raffle for a chance to win a fantastic children’s reading hamper. You just need to fill in one of our golden bookmarks with your child’s name, class, small book review and £1 donation to enter.
World Book Day
World Book day is an enjoyable event that Ryecroft celebrates in the Spring term each year. On this day children are invited to come to school with their favourite book for bedtime and wearing their pyjamas. We also have special visitors in school to read to children and exciting events take place throughout the day. These are then posted on school Dojo and on our school website. Encouraging children to read and celebrating this is school is something we feel is very important.
Ryecroft Reading Race
The great Ryecroft Reading Race is our reading initiative to encourage the link between school and home reading. Parents and carers are our greatest partners in improving children’s reading and we want to reward this help and support.
In classrooms and cloakrooms each class has a ‘Reading Race’ track where every child has their own 'marker'. and will move along the track collecting the 4 awards across the year.
Bronze Award – 50 Home Reads
Silver Award – 100 Home Reads
Gold Award – 200 Home Reads
Governors’ Award – 250 Home Reads
We had lots of children last year reaching the bronze, silver and gold awards with some children even reaching 'governors award' status with 250 home reads.
Extreme Reading Challenges
Held every spring term is our Extreme Reading Challenge. Children can participate by having a picture taken reading in the most exiting ‘extreme’ wildest place you can think of. Don’t forget – safety first! These will be displayed in school, on the school website and on Dojo and the winner will receive a fantastic prize from Mrs Blythe in assembly.
Travelling Book Fairs
Twice a year we hold our book fair in school. The Travelling book fair will drop their books in school for a week and each class will have an opportunity to visit the fair with their parents and purchase any books or order online. Any commission made from the book fair will then be spent on new books for school.
Reading Buddies
Our Y2 and FS2 children love their time with their 'Reading Buddies' when they support them with their phonetically decodable reading. The children asked if they could also share 'Reading for Enjoyment' books with the children too from their book bags or from their 'favourites' baskets in their classrooms.
Library Bus
We have been lucky enough to have had the ‘library bus’ visit school. All of our Year 1 and Year 2 children were able to get onboard and have the experience of a visit to the library on wheels! There were some great new books and new authors for us to read and the people who were running the bus were excellent at reading stories. We hope the children who have joined and taken books enjoyed the experience and use the local library in the same way.
Big Book Giveaway
At the end of our school year we hold a ‘Big Book Giveaway’ stall in the school playground for you to pick up a new book to take home and read for enjoyment. These are books which we no longer need in school or have been donated by our staff or our families and still have plenty of life in them for someone else to enjoy.
Reading Events
Parents/Carers are invited to come into school to join their child for story time with their Class Teacher & Teaching Assistants. Staff will choose one of their favourite stories to read to you all.
This is a great opportunity for you to see how staff share stories at school and engage children in the pleasure of sharing books.
